HISTORY

Frome chess club is one of the oldest clubs in Somerset, founded in 1886. The club held a centenary celebration in 1986 with events around Frome e.g. street fayre, simultaneous display by Grandmaster Michael Adams etc.

In 1990 the club started the annual May Frome Chess Congress. This Congress has Sections catering for all standards and ages of players from rank beginners to Grandmasters and attracts up to 200 entrants from all over the UK (and even abroad).

The club has had many venues over the years but has been well settled in its present excellent venue at the Frome Rugby Club since 1993. Previous venues in modern times have been: the South Parade Social Club 1977-82; the Lamb Public House, Bath Street 1982-1986; The Griffin Inn, Milk Street 1986-1991; The Blue Boar Public House 1991-1993
